There is in the 1.5.x versions (developmental) an ability to import
MSpub files. I haven't tested this, but your 1.5.x has had to have been
compiled with the necessary libraries to do this.
Scribus can import Word documents, BUT formatting will be lost, so just
the text is imported. What is recommended there is to use LibreOffice to
take the Word document and convert to ODT format so that Scribus can
then import styles.
For Scribus, 1200 pages, especially with pictures, would likely need to
be broken up into smaller files, creating smaller PDFs, then stitching
them together to one big PDF. There are various utilities to do that.
