Ambitious --- so a changes file has to be kept for each file?

Wow, think of the security implications[1], plus there is also the risk of
Joe user having a heart attack as he sees his changes being undone
in front of his very eyes. Maybe you could it the Halloween version? :)

[1] Yes even on Windoze, it should be a concern.
