The latest development version of Scribus, 1.5.0 has the Story Editor.
And the Manual says on p 71 "The Story Editor is the easiest way to 
enter text directly from the keyboard." It is not deprecated AFAIK. I 
always work in the story editor.

At this point an upgrade to 1.3.8 seems to be in order. While not yet 
officially stable it may work better than
