[scribus] Column question

Welcome to Scribus Harvey!

Your questions are welcome too. And the more information you give us,
the better we can help you.

Maybe your first project in Scribus is just a one-page poster?

In Scribus you should hit F2 and always have space to keep the F2-window
open. We use two screens on our layout computer, to have space for all
the tools and information-windows. We also keep the F6-window open
always (layers) and the document Outline.

For columns, you need a text-frame, which you pull up with the
text-frame tool.

Then you select that text-frame, so that it shows a red frame and
handles. Now you can click on the text-tab within the F2-window. You
will find a sub-tab called Columns & Text distances. Here you can play
with the columns until you get the settings you need.

I have given this, based on Version 1.4.3; if you are using something
different, that would be information to include with your next request.

If you are very ambitious, and you tend to want "total control" over
your text, you can also define guidelines and individual text-boxes.
Those you can link with the Link Text Frames (N) tool. That way you can
have any custom column-layout you can dream up. Since we are doing a
magazine, we do our "columns" this manual way, for full flexibility;
even though it is a little more work.
Helpful in this context is the feature to snap your text to the
baseline grid. (Also available in F2 window on text-tab on the "fixed
linespacing"-button as an alternative option; you need to take your
cursor outside the text and select the entire text-box, to be able to
select the linespacing options)

Sorry, if I got your question wrong. Maybe you literally want to know,
where to find information yourself.

First idea: Go here:

http://wiki.scribus.net/canvas/Help:TOC

Type "columns" into the top-right search-box and you will find stuff
like this:

http://wiki.scribus.net/canvas/Get_Started_With_Scribus:6

Second idea: In the help, which comes with Scribus (Help-menu -> Scribus
manual), you will find a write-up called "Working with Text" which is
also giving an example about setting up a multi-page document.

Third idea: When we started using Scribus for publishing, we bought this
book, and it has given us a good kick-start. (I believe it is written in
English)

Scribus: Open-Source Desktop Publishing von Christoph Schäfer und weiteren
http://www.amazon.de/dp/0956078001
ISBN-13: 978-0956078001

Have fun with Scribus. Any time you invest now for finding your way
around, is time well spent. Scribus can do so much more, than I
initially knew. But some goodies are a little "hidden", like treasures.

greetings,

Martin
