Its not because it is smaller (although this is still an issue when
sending stuff over the Internet), but rather because it is in one file.
One file is easier to use than a folder. I create zip files when I want
to move or store folders conveniently. Still, I have to zip and unzip
all of them, so I do not use it as much as I would like. As I said, I
always find it quite inconvenient if I have 20 files for a Latex
document, even though this is all just one file e.g. in OOo or MS Word.

On the other hand, you can see it like this: Memory is cheap nowadays,
so why not just unzip the whole zip file of a scribus document into
memory and work from there?
