It seems that with the various updates with hplip and cups, I can
sometimes have trouble getting a driver that works, ie, doesn't send PS
commands to my non-PS printers. With persistence I have usually been
able to overcome this.
With my recent upgrade to Fedora 15, the odd thing that seems to be the
case is that when I have my nonworking printer connected, the printer
configuration software can't seem to find a list of alternative printer
drivers, yet when the printer is not connected, it can find them and I
can make an alternative choice (like CUPS-Gutenprint) that works.

I think it's worth checking the appropriate mail lists and forums for
your Linux distro. With enough stubbornness and persistence I can
usually get such things figured out.
