I've done this many times -- "lost" PDFs, and what I do is what Barry 
suggests. Where your PDFs go at times seems mysterious, but I think it 
may depend on your system default settings, or where you last saved a 
PDF, since it's not a setting in Preferences (at least specifically for 
PDFs).
