[scribus] Troubles importing images into 1.5.0.

Trying to convert a cover image from a customer to PDF X/1-a via
Scribus 1.5.0, build C-C-T-F-C1.8.6 of 4 October.

I created a page size in Scribus exactly equal to the pdf. Then I
imported that pdf. All I got was the outline of the large print
characters and no graphics at all. So I converted the pdf to ps with
Ghostscript and used the online ps2pdf conversion facility of Adobe.
Same result.

Then I imported the pdf into Gimp and saved it as tiff. I created a
large graphic frame exactly matching the dimensions of the original
pdf and the new tiff. When I placed the tiff I got a red "X" with the
name of the tiff file in the middle of the X. I tried fitting the image
to the frame but that didn't help. Tried converting to svg in
Inkscape. Got the inkscape svg file but the text was overlaid in a few
places.

Right now I am running out of (un)clever tricks. any suggestions?
