[scribus] cannot open or load data

I'm using scribus 1.3.8 (1.3.7 until yesterday -> re-installing did not 
solve my problem).
I do have an exisiting scribus document open and I am trying to import a 
vector file/EPS or TIFF (need them all).
IMPORT, also with right click leads to the same problem: the window that 
follows/opens with this command is supposed to show my image files, but 
the window is empty except for the icon "My Computer", which cannot be 
double-clicked. I just don't understand why I can see the path for the 
folder that contains the files for import, but the folder nor the files 
occur in the window to be selected.

I've worked with scribus on another computer already (with the same 
files of images even), and all this stuff went just perfect. but not on 
my computer.:/
