Are you using compressed jpegs? If so, be sure you have unticked the pdf 
converter box which says "Resample images to"  It can expand them back 
to humoungus file sizes - I know - I nearly freaked once when I 
downloaded the latest Scribus and this box  somehow got ticked.  Even if 
I really compressed the pics hard, Scribus was happily making them big 
again  :-)
