Actually, I can't even find Kpdf any more. In the latest Ubuntu it
seems to have morphed into Okular. I have tried printing the PDF with
Okular and I still can't get correct orientation and size. I have also
tried Evince. In the Evince print dialog box there is not even an
option to select portrait v. landscape. That is a major problem in
Linux - the printer has many software-selectable options, but the print
dialog boxes for many applications do not display the options.

I also have Adobe Reader 8.1 installed on Linux, and 9.1 as well. Still
cannot get the correct orientation and size. Furthermore, Adobe Reader
cannot find Tray 1 - regardless of which tray I tell it to print from
it prints from Tray 2.

I have also tried exporting to PS and sending the file to the Phaser
7400DN with the command line. This finally got me landscape, but the
image is printed as though there is a 6" margin on the top and left.
Using lpoptions does not list all the commands that I need in order to
access the necessary features of the printer. E.g., I cannot find the
lpr syntax for manually setting margins to zero.

Selecting features in the Printer's Properties window also fails to get
me correct output, although some things did help. For example, setting
the default orientation to landscape, duplexing to off, page size to
tabloid extra and input tray to Tray 1 means that I don't have to
select those options in an application's print dialog box. But even
having done that Adobe Reader insists on pulling the paper from Tray 2.

I can't tell if the problems are in CUPS, the applications or the
printer driver (PPD file). And bear in mind that this printer has a
zillion options, many of which have confusing names or lack of
documentation. For example, you can select whether to print on plain
paper, thin card stock, thick card stock or extra thick card stock (in
addition to various other paper thicknesses). I can't find anywhere
what those features mean in terms of grams per square meter. And yes,
it is important to set it correctly for the paper you are using, else
the toner won't fuse properly.

I'll keep poking at it, but there are so many options that it may take
the rest of my life to hit on the right combination. :( I keep hoping
I can find a Linux user who actually owns one of these printers.

Just to show you how messed up printing on Linux is, here is how I
finally got correct output:

Set the Printer to default of TabloidExtra, no duplex, Portrait.
Open the PDF (exported from Scribus) in Okular
Print by setting in the printer Properties tab the margins to -0- and
	the orientation to Portrait

The landscape page then prints centered on the page in landscape mode.
If I tell it to print in landscape mode the output is portrait.

But Okular prints only one copy at a time because its "number of
copies" drop-down option is broken. And when you go to reprint it
remembers nothing of the options you set the previous time, so you have
to click - type - click - type all the way through the print dialog
boxes over again for each copy.

This time I needed only 20 copies. I sure hope I find a better way
before the time comes when I need several hundred copies of this cover.

Two unrelated questions.

Mailing List:

I found this via the Contact Scribus User Support Mailing List [
http://www.scribus.net/?q=help ] page and I logged my details in.

However it did not seem to work, and after clicking the 'Send Email'
button I ended up on a blank screen and my message did not find its way
to the list. I'm guessing this is a cookies issue as I have them
disabled but this is not the problem.

The problem is that my name and details are now public [
http://www.scribus.net/?q=node/158/submission/162 ], as are everyone
else who has used that form.

Publishing someone's name and email address on an open web page is not
good practice. There are obvious privacy and spam issues here.

Is it really the intention of list moderators to publish this
information and would they be kind enough to delete my info please?

Importing Styles

The problem I was originally seeking help on is this:

A possible newbie question but I cannot find anything the FAQ / Wiki.

I have an Open Office (3.0.1) Writer document with some basic styles set
up.

Importing the document into a frame in Scribus using Get Text with the
importer set to Automatic, I select Overwrite and Merge Paragraph Styles
on the Open Document Importer Options.

The text is imported and formatted OK, styles are created and everything
looks right.

However when I go into Story Editor, everything is marked as 'No Style'.
It seems whilst the text is formatted according to the styles, the text
is not linked to the styles.

I was expecting all the text to linked to the imported styles so that I
could tweak the styles in Scribus and have the updated formatting
applied to all the text using that style.

Is this a bug or user error?

Running OSX 10.5, using 1.3.5svn, build ID C-C-T-F-Q-Mac/Aqua

Thanks in advance.

Chris

Hi

I know Ubuntu bashing has been fair game, in regards to how well or not
it works with Scribus (I've never actually had any specific problems
with it myself), but Ubuntu at least gets this right:-

Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty) Standard - 1.3.3.13
                                  Dev - 1.3.5RC

I think actually it may be worth seeing if the original Ubuntu/Scribus
problems are still there, as I have a feeling the spinboxes may have
been fixed for many people. At whether we like it or not, Ubuntu is
still one of the most used distributions.

(and it has the right version of Scribus too ;-) )
