You can probably put the boot image on a memory stick these days.

My guess is that the core material you want is probably only a few 
hundred meg, and most people I know install packages off the net to get 
the latest stuff even if they have the original CD.  I suppose it 
depends when you want the material though. If you want to play with lots 
of packages to start with, the DVD would be fresh still, and if you 
wanted to get packages when your OS release was no longer supported, the 
DVD might be the only sensible source of packages ?
