Well you really have to read the book :<) He lists 11 sources in the 
References section including:
Typography,: How to Make it most Legible, Rolf Rehe, Design Research 
IInternational 1983
Legibility in Print, Miles A. Tinker, Iowa state University Press, 
1963

But most of the research is Wheildon's own.
"A total of 224 people, drawn from ten Sydney suburbs, completed the 
first program---a series of tests run over a period of five years."

There was also a second series of tests, and a third,  and a flyer 
study conducted by NRMA (like the U.S AAA) involving 4,000 
participants in the type sub sample.

Enough. Read the book.  This is one man's lifelong passion and 
study.  He describes the individual tests and charts the results.
