to characterize Scribus PDFs as unreliable is simply incorrect. As far
as the size of the PDFs, there are recommendations in the docs and the
wiki about how to reduce the size. One way of reducing size is to
reduce image quality, but at some point this is a losing proposition for
you.
As someone else has suggested, I think you need to look around for other
printers, especially when you plan on spending this kind of money for 5
copies of your book.
