Yes, this goes back to the difference between settings in File > 
Preferences and File > Document Setup.
The former changes for future *new* documents, not the current one, the 
latter for current document only, and this setting is saved with the 
document.
There are a few exceptions, mainly where a setting is unique to Preferences.

So you should be able to take your original document and change its 
setting in File > Document Setup > Color Management.
