More specifically which version of MEPIS are you using? I looked up 6.5 
is based on Ubuntu 6.06 Dapper, 7 is now more directly off of Debian 
although I'm not sure which particular repo will be more compatible from 
that page linked in the last email.

Synaptic should be available if not already installed to help you manage 
packages, and follow those screenshots.
