Just to offer my version of the history of the list, there at one point
was a discussion about how much encouragement there should be to post in
English, a milder flavor of which is expressed by Thomas above. Many on
the list voiced concern about the negative tone of some of these, which
came across in rather directive German (no bitte's about it). In the
end, it was agreed to be more flexible in consideration of those who
really struggle with their English, with several list members
volunteering to help with answers, and translations when this might lead
to additional help from those who almost exclusively know English.

But even now, I'm not sure how it's taken when sentences begin with
"...Englisch is die bessere Sprache...", even with the "kleine Pflicht"
at the end.
