Well, there are also symbols needed that can in some cases not be considered to be characters.

So, a special twodimensional arrangement of characters and symbols.

Well, yes, that's how it is done in LaTeX, but it means you can not separate the "text entry" from the "markup", the formula must be marked up at entry. Doing it afterwords is more or less impossible.
