I notice that the GIMP does load the PDF, but says there are errors.  It says:

   **** Warning: Fonts with Subtype = /TrueType should be embedded.
                 But Helvetica-Bold is not embedded.
   **** Warning: Fonts with Subtype = /TrueType should be embedded.
                 But Helvetica is not embedded.

   **** This file had errors that were repaired or ignored.
   **** The file was produced by:
