Thanks Owen and Craig,

I guess if I use configure's switches (--libdir, etc), I will have to
put all libraries in the directory pointed to by --libdir - if I
install more programs in the same tree that use the same libraries,
that is. Do you know of any dependency querying tool that can help me
find out which library is being referenced by which program? I came
across Pkg-config, which seems to offer the same functionality, but
its documentation is so dense that I have put off its exploration to
some other time.

However, using the options --with-extra-libs and --with-extra-includes
in addition to using CPATH, LIBRARY_PATH, LD_LIBRARY_PATH and PATH
sounds closer to what I am trying to achieve. I will try these and
get back if I have further problems, shall I?

ZLib and JPEG stock libraries do exist but the latest versions of
GhostScript/PSToEdit requires newer versions of these libraries, if I
recall correctly, that is.

BTW, where are LIBRARY_PATH, CPATH, LD_LIBRARY_PATH documented? IIRC,
I haven't seen them in the output of "configure --help".

Thanks and regards

Asif
