You'd need to use PIL (http://www.pythonware.com/) but can definitely do
it.

This interface will most likely change in future versions.
With Python it's easy to fall back to a no-PIL method at runtime if
necessary, so you don't need to worry about the extra dependency so long
as you check the import and only use PIL if it's present.
