Debian is no different than any other Linux when it comes to software 
compiles and tracking. Though you could wait for the deb to be updated, 
you can just as easily get a developer toolchain set up and compile.

A tip, though: checkinstall is your friend. It allows you to use your 
native package tracking system (apt, rpm or tgz) to track compiled software.
