do you get any messages in the console window if you try this from your
home dir? ie, so you are running ~/Scribus/scribus?

You did do a make install into ~/Scribus/scribus didnt you?
This is not the dir that you built Scribus in?
If all you have done is
make -d Makefile.dist
./configure
make
you have missed the
"make install" step.
