I am not sure why your printer would insist on EPS, when PDF is much
less troublesome IMO. Any full version of Acrobat 4+ can take a PDF and
directly save as EPS, so can Illustrator - but you are limited to 1 page
documents. I can't imagine a printer that does not have a full version
of Acrobat installed.

Which has a PDF handling Scribus PDF files with other professional DTP
applications.

Probably, especially if you have enabled embedding fonts and and your
images are high enough resolution.

That could be an Apple X11 bug. Or related to a missing/inaccessable
library
