At the moment, Scribus has excellent direct support for CUPS which is
excellent for controlling driver features in the printer.(You should see
the dialog box from hell when you print to a high end laser or RIP.:)

If you run KDE3, the workaround for needs when printing to a typical
inkjet or office printer is to use the option for an alternative printer
and just enter kprinter without the usual kprinter --stdin.

kprinter can enable these kinds of features if you go to the Image tab.

The caveat is you are now bringing Ghostscript into the picture, which
depending on the type of printer and version of Ghostscript, may or may
not be able to handle the advanced PS3/PDF 1.4 postscript Scribus can
generate.

Hence, our constant admonition to get the latest updated version of
Ghostscript for your distro. It will be helpful when Linux distros have
packaged GS 8.1+, as it is *much* better at handling the high level PS
Scribus can generate.

Hope that helps,
Peter
