Did you try changing the text color using the Tools -> Properties ->
Text tools? This works for me (Debian PPC), while using the Style
menu gives me the results you describe. 

Is this new behavior of the Style menu intentional, or a bug? I assumed
it was a bug, since the other features of the Style menu apply to
selected text.
