why use a hammer when you can use a screwdriver... no, it was
the other way round...

however:

- create a black shape
- create a text frame on top of it
- give them the form you wish
- group them
- you can still edit the text if you hold down the alt key while double
  clicking on it (or you can open the story editor if you prefer)

or is there any specific reason why you are putting the shape on a
different layer?
