I downloaded a new font that comes with Finale and I'm trying to use some
of the special characters but they're showing up as blank squares... how do
I get the notation to show up? Thanks!

It may be that you can't use these characters, but...

You can get tripped up by trying to use Story Editor, where the font in Story Editor is some other font.
Try using Edit Contents mode -- double click on a text frame, make sure you have your new font selected in the Text Properties palette, then from the menu select Insert > Glyph.
A dialog should pop up. Now click the left-most item in the dialog toolbar, and a table should show up where you can select whatever glyphs the font has available. Scroll down to see whether any of these special characters show up. If you can see them in this table, you can use them in Scribus.

If you want to use Story Editor, just make sure you change the display font for it when the editor pops up.
