Why would I even start using Scribus frequently if actual versions are not running anymore on my system within 4 years. I mean that is what Apple and Adobe are doing intentionally and the main reason to get away from them. Now if Opensource software does the same, there really is no reason anymore to use it.<br><br>Also you developers think too much technical. Users of your software are designers like me. I am not interested in Building a software or read about why you limit your development on the availability of certain libraries or whatever Qt is (I read QuickTime). If you ever want to be serious in developing a tool that is actually used by designers, you have to make it easy to get and use and make it durable. Otherwise it is no alternative to Adobe or Quark and no help to GNU/Linux because as long as there is no comparable tool available, someone like me is not able to switch over to GNU/Linux. Thats why I am still on Apple, but I refuse to go along with Apple forcing me to always have the most actual OS. 10.6.8 is a perfectly fine OS. There has been no necessary development since, except that artificial forcing anyone to create software that only runs on the newest OS for absolutely no reason.<br><br>Well, just my thought here.<br><br>Regards<br>Thom<br></blockquote><div><br></div><div>Hi Thom,</div><div><br></div><div>Thanks for your email. Some clarifications: I'm not a code developer. I'm a Scribus project volunteer. I'm an OSX user like yourself. </div><div>I was the one who set up the 'brew cask' link on the Scribus download page. brew cask is simply a command line OSX binary downloader [1]. It sits on top of Homebrew, an OSX package manager [2]. It's a separate project from Homebrew. The requirements of Homebrew say "10.9 or higher is recommended. <b>10.5 - 10.8 are supported on a best-effort basis.</b> For 10.4 and 10.5, see Tigerbrew." [3]</div><div><br></div><div>I applaud you for sticking to your guns and continuing to use 10.6, as you can see there are some even more hardcore folks that are still using 10.4 and 10.5. But.... it has it's repercussions. One of them not being able to use the latest fixes and shiny new software that is released. Another repercussion is making an effort to being informed and understanding what this means of for you as a user who is deciding to forgo upgrading. </div><div><br></div><div>Qt is a cross-platorm framework that Scribus is built on. With every version iteration new bugs get fixed, new components are added, old components are upgraded or are removed. Scribus needs to keep up with those changes because if it doesn't, functionality will start to break, especially on OSX which Qt5 has way more support for then Qt4 did [4] I've been looking at a lot of Scribus bugs lately as I been cleaning the bugtracker [5] and believe me Qt5 bugs are annoying because we need to submit reports to the Qt bugtracker directly (or follow open issues that have been filed alreaady) in order to get that functionality to work. Sometimes the Qt folks decide not to fix the issue or de-prioritize it. BTW, this is all Qt5, we're not even talking Qt4. So all I'm saying that there is complexity and sophistication here that you need to be aware of.</div><div><br></div><div>Another aspect that you don't see is that it takes ALOT of effort to maintain a cross-platform application like Scribus. This effort is volunteer based. No one is getting paid. Scribus still doesn't have a way to practically and in a streamlined manner accept donations. To ask a developer to extend themselves to have backward compatible support for what is considered obsolete software, think of the compilers, libraries, and all the dependencies that need to be kept archived in order to sustain that.... is asking them to do a lot of work and commit resources. One of them most importantly being 'Time'. </div><div><br></div><div>I hope that clarifies things a little better to understand what is involved in your request. Of course, like in many open source projects, if you see a need then you can also choose to fill that need. Perhaps you can offer an alternative idea or even resources to achieve your need. Even if you did, it would need to be green-lit by the core-developers. Welcome to open source :)</div><div><br></div><div>HTH,</div><div>/Kunda</div><div><br></div><div>[1] <a href="http://caskroom.io">http://caskroom.io</a></div><div>[2] <a href="http://brew.sh">http://brew.sh</a></div><div>[3] <a href="https://github.com/Homebrew/homebrew/blob/master/share/doc/homebrew/Installation.md#2">https://github.com/Homebrew/homebrew/blob/master/share/doc/homebrew/Installation.md#2</a></div>[4] As of 2/12/16 "OS X 10.7 "Lion" and 10.8 "Mountain Lion" are considered reference configurations, meaning they are tested by a continuous integration (CI) system. <b>Qt 5 applications may be deployed to Mac OS X versions 10.6 "Snow Leopard", but support is limited.</b>"<div>[5] <a href="http://bugs.scribus.net">http://bugs.scribus.net</a></div></div></div></div></div></div>
