Dear Scribus Users Group,

I am putting together a layout for a magazine that needs to be sent to a commercial printer and I am trying to figure out the bleeds. Does anyone know of a tutorial that describes how to use the bleed feature in Scribus? (I'm using 1.4 RC5.) The information on the wiki that I found was related to workarounds for bleeds.

Also, any hints on how to handle bleeds in a magazine layout versus a poster or a business card?
Probably the place to start might be your commercial printer, to get advice on the various possible settings. The terminology that you see in the PrePress tab of PDF Export is pretty straightforward.

I expect the printer will be able to tell you which he might be able to work with and whether there are some he really doesn't need.
Greg

Greg's advice is spot on. The type of press your printer uses will dictate, more than anything else, what sort of bleeds he will require. Also, the type of binding will make a difference. Talk to him about where he needs bleeds and how wide they should be for trimming. Then, I think you will find it pretty straight forward.

FWIW, I edit a 60 - 80 page magazine with Scribus that is saddle stitched so the cover requires bleeds on the top and bottom edges, plus the outside edge, away from the binding. The binding side of the cover does not require a bleed since the front and back covers butt up to one another along the binding edge. However, that is just my situation. Yours may differ as I know nothing about the size of your mag nor its binding.

If you use a different pre-press company from your printer, as I do, you may want to talk to them, as well. In that case, the three of you will need to work in concert to insure a quality appearance.

As most hereon, I'm more than willing to help anytime I can. I'm using Scribus 1.4.0 RC5 on a Ubuntu 11.04 Linux platform.
