Hi Colin,
first of all: please don't hijack topics while writing to a mailing list 
and please use more speaking themes than 'scribus is dead'!

To your problem: Your description reads more like your Mac is running 
out of memory while your editing your huge document. Did you try to 
monitor yours systems resources?

I would recommend to split the document up to smaller parts, perhaps on 
chapter based.
