Hello
I use scribus on a buster Debian but I want to upgrade scribus to 1.5.6.
The apt install with backport for scribus/bullseye warns me it does not
exist.
I see on tracker.debian.org/pkg/scribus? : [2020-11-15] Accepted scribus
1.5.6.1+dfsg-1 (source) into unstable
(Mattia Rizzolo)
Does it means only source is available to install with apt ?
Thank you for your answer.

I never uploaded scribus to backports, so in buster only 1.4.8 is
available.
Furthermore, scribus 1.5.6 requires Qt 5.12, whereas in buster there is
only Qt 5.11, which makes impossible to build it.

No, that means that I uploaded only the source, instead of the binaries.
the binaries are then built automatically. but that's uploaded "into
unstable", not to buster or buster-backports.
Overall, if you need 1.5.6 I can suggest you either upgrade your system
to Debian Testing (Bullseye - which is going to become stable next year,
I guess by Summer should be released), or use some other method like
appimage, snap, etc.

Subject: [scribus] Problems with fonts and styles
Message-ID:
I have the latest release of Scribus (1.5.6.1) running on an iMac running OS 10.15.7. I?m using the latest version of LibreOffice to load .odt files in to Scribus. I have generated simple scripts using Paragraph Styles to control the transformation of a variety of fonts and styles in LibreOffice to a standard (Times New Roman, 10pt) in Scribus. I have had no serious problems with previous versions of Scribus running the same styles scripts.
But now I am getting a mix of fonts (mostly not changing Arial into TNR) at a mix of sizes (most 12pt when I have specified 10pt.). I have checked the styles scripts and they seem fine - unchanged from previous use. Pl;ease advise.
I have also been getting a large number of styles placed in the lists of Styles, labelled ?Text[xxx]List / Caption / Heading ? etc. They proliferate and are a niusance. How can I stop them being generated?
Another minor gripe is getting the file to hold steady in the working window. It never seems to fill the window laterally and moves from side to side in an apparently unco-ordinated manner.
And finally - how can I get a file laid out as a column of separate pages to show paired pages (L / R)? I can do it with a small file, but my standard length is 48 pp and I can?t get the pages to pair.
Otherwise the program is excellent!
Thanks in advance
Julian Vincent

Hi Julian,
You might show us the syntax you used in your script. There is some trickiness in the specifications of parameters with createCharacterStyle. Some of this is indicated in the manual:
"Due to the important number of arguments of this function, it is strongly advised to use Python keyword syntax when calling this function. For example if a style needs to alter only font size, do not use this syntax:
newStyle = createCharStyle("New Style", "Arial Regular", 12)
but use this syntax instead:
newStyle = createCharStyle("New Style", fontsize=12)"
A Paragraph Style does not set font type and size, but uses a Character Style.
You might try setting Display parameters in Preferences to see if this helps the placement of the document in the window.
Unfortunately, the side-by-side display of left-right pages disappeared some time ago.

Subject: [scribus] book cover spine
Message-ID:
Good Morning,
I am creating a book cover in Scribus for a Lulu publication. I am using
the template from Lulu and have been able to insert the back cover art and
the front cover art into the template with Scribus. But I can't figure out
how to get the spine text going the right way. How do I get the text to go
down the spine instead of horizontally across the spine? So far, I have
just tried "inserting a text box" into the spine, but can't figure out
where to go to change the direction of the text. Any help would be greatly
appreciated. The more specific, the better! I'm not very technologically
savvy, so most of these things aren't automatic for me.
Thank you very much for your help.

Hi Cliffe,
Use the Properties palette to rotate the text frame 90 degrees in the direction you want.

Thank you for getting back to me. I've found the properties palette and the
rotation section. Can you tell me step by step what to do next? I can see
that the text box can be rotated, but when I type into it, it still has the
text going in the wrong direction!
Help!

Try typing either 90 or 270 degrees into the box for rotation. One of those
will give you type heading in the direction you desire.

You can also use the scrollwheel of your mouse -- put the pointer in the Rotation box, then scroll.
If you hold down Ctrl, you make jumps of 10 degrees. 270 degrees should put the top of the text box to the right for the spine.
You'll probably have to reposition the frame also (adjust the X-Pos and Y-Pos).

I have just updated to this latest version
Very good but I seem to have one problem - probably me not understanding
the change
The earlier version showed a range of colours available but this version
seems to show only black and white, althigh if you load material done in
the earlier version all the colours seem to be shown. I presume there is a
simple way of getting the usual colours and adject them for shades
If anyone can point me in the rright directiuo I would be very
appreciated.

Hi Phil,
It's worth your while to play with the Edit Colors and Fills dialog a bit so you can understand how to switch or edit color sets.

If you click on 'Mode aper?u' you should see the outline disappear in Scribus, unless you have colored the Stroke ('Contour').
This type of problem doesn't make sense -- you may need to upload a file showing it to https://bugs.scribus.net/

Google translate does a considerably better job than it used to. Whatever you might use, you can expect to need to tweak the results to have it seem more natural.
I translated the French Flossmanuals book on Scribus using Google translate, then smoothing out the language so that it seemed like it might have been written in English.
