Hi Joan,
An option to at least consider is to not use tables at all. Instead, you
might import a CSV file into a text frame, and instead of having
individual cells, you use the tabulator to place the items from your
CSV. Spreadsheet programs have CSV export as an option.

If there is a lot of trickiness to how you wish your table to look,
there is also the option of doing your spreadsheet work in a spreadsheet
program, then exporting the table as an image, then importing the image
to Scribus. You won't be able to edit the table once imported into
Scribus in this way.
