It depends on how you upgrade. I don't like the automated upgrade
method, since in the past it rendered my computer unbootable afterward
-- what a mess!

Hi Greg, I haven't had problems with the automatic upgrades, but I wait for a while after the release, and before doing the upgrade, I always burn and test the live cd and make a backup of my files, so if something goes wrong, I can wipe the disk and do a fresh install. I also save a list of the installed packages with a command like
  rpm -qa --qf "%{NAME}\n" | sort -u > "pkg-`uname -n | sed -e 's/\..*//'`-`date '+%Y%m%d'`.txt"
so I can restore them.
