[scribus] Scribus 1.5

Well, Darius has suggested that he would like to be able to compile for Windows, and inquiring who else has done so and he is asking can they work together.

I have a lot of pages of graphics to put together on my new computer and if I need to add color well then I know that 1.5 could do the job.

But more than that I want to get to know the program, with other versions I have come to the happy situation that I can do most jobs with.

It would be a hard going to suddenly have to do everything on a new program such as version 1.5.

Wena.

Hi,

sure. But in this font one number let's say 24 (encirled) is a single
character mapped to somewhere let's say to letter 'p'. In order to use
it, you must put a letter p onto that page. I don't think this is
feasible for page numbering. But for some purposes this font is quite
useful, that's why I mentioned it.

There is some simple thing you're missing.
Perhaps your image frame is underneath the text frame. You may think you
don't have more than one layer, but maybe you do. You can only work on
one layer at a time.
As a.l.e says, you cannot accomplish what you're trying to do with
Master Pages.

If you can select an image frame, you can right-click and Get Image.

My suggestion for putting them on multiple pages, once you get the above
figured out:

Right-click on the image frame, select Send to Scrapbook > Main, giving
it a name.

Open the Scrapbook with Windows > Scrapbook.
Go to a page where you wish to paste the copy, double click on the
Scrapbook image frame, and it will be placed where the original was, but
on the new page. If you set Text Flows around Frame before you sent to
the Scrapbook, all your pasted copies will have that property too.

Of course it can be, but there are a lot more dependencies that you need to work out how to build. There?s a building doc in the root of SVN that might help but its not 100% update for the current toolset. It will be for the 1.5.0 release though.

That's what I thought. I have resolved all dependencies apart from QT5.
I have been trying to build it, but after an hour or so the build
process stops with a "no rule to make target for". Pretty annoying...

Regards, Darius

The longer and much clearer answer is: yes, but ... ;)

If it weren't possible to build 1.5.0svn on Windows we'd be really screwed, because one of our main developers works on Windows.

The problem is that compiling Scribus (or any other complex programme with many dependencies) on Windows is frustratingly complicated. You also need to download tonnes of other software, among them Microsoft Visual Studio Express and Qt5 (be prepared to update your Qt5 version on a regular basis). You also need to download the source code of all dependencies and compile them with Visual Studio Express. This requires, obviously, to learn how to use VS Express.

You also need a *very* fast and powerful computer because otherwise compiling will take forever.

It's much easier to install a mainstream Linux distribution like Fedora or OpenSUSE in a virtual machine, install all the dependencies via the respective package managers, learn a handful of command line options, and you're done. Compiling on Linux is also much faster than on Windows (or Mac OS X), even in a virtual machine on a five-years-old computer.

Moreover, some features, like OpenSceneGraph and GraphicsMagick support, aren't available on Windows yet.

Another alternative is to wait a few weeks, because Scribus 1.5.0 will be released very soon :)

HTH,

Christoph

the answer was for wena.

it is not currently possible for her to compile scribus on windows.

of course, it *is* possible to compile scribus on windows!
but not if you have never compiled anything before.

the fact is that there is only one person having ever compiled scribus
1.5.0svn on windows!
and he did it not only once but he does it many times a day...

i think it was you who suggested to provide the precompiled
versions of the dependencies: that would of course make it much easier
to compile scribus an i would really welcome such an effort!

if you got stuck on that path, as another mail from you suggests it,
please provide some details so that other people (not me!) can
help you get through!

and for all who read through here and got scared, compiling scribus on
linux is almost trivial and it's rather easy on os x.
it's really a windows issue...

No problem to give some details. However, I'm just curious; who has
been able to compile on windows? What architecture and what compiler? It
would be good to team up and boost windows compilation so we can attract
a bigger developer group. I have collected all dependencies so far apart
from QT5. I will have a look to see if I can install a binary
distribution of this library so I don't need to compile this huge
library! Next I have also patched the cmake so it recognizes the
pre-built libraries. When I would succeed then compiling on windows
would be easier than compiling on linux.
