gimp can edit metadata under File -> Properties -> Advanced and under Image -> Image Properties -> Comment http://libregraphicsworld.org/blog/entry/gimp-gets-advanced-exif-xmp-iptc-metadata-support
If the copyright is the same, it might be easier to script exiftool. http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/ 
Some people have written GUIs for exiftool, for example EnZenToo (which uses Zenity which runs over GTK+)  http://u88.n24.queensu.ca/exiftool/forum/index.php/topic,4715.0.html
