[scribus] "Blank" document

Really?!? No-one (else) has any suggestion on how to fix this? Or debug this?

I tried 1.4.4 on windows but the document appears blank there as well.
1.4.5-trunk seems to be the only version that does open the document
correctly but is otherwise unusably slow, I can't wait 5-10 seconds
after each click of a mouse for something to happen.

Any help is higly appreciated, I even promise not to bother anyone
about Scribus in the future.. Right now I'm seriously considering
re-doing everything with InDesign.
