Magical as Adobe Acrobat is, it cannot print
layers that are not included in the pdf file.
In Greg's example as I understand it a layer is
omitted from the pdf export. On my current
project I excluded the layer I use for most
graphics from printing. I exported the file to a
pdf. The graphics included in that layer did not
show up in the pdf when I checked it in Okular.
But graphics placed in the remaining layer did
show up in Okular. QED
