Lest anyone be confused by this apples to oranges comparison.

TeX is a typesetting system developed by Donald Knuth
pdfTeX is a variant of TeX which makes .pdfs directly developed by Hàn Thế Thành

LaTeX is a macro package which runs on top of TeX and TeX variants
ConTeXt is another macro package which runs on top of more recent TeX variants such as pdfTeX, XeTeX and luaTeX
