Barcode is the last item in the dropdown list. The ISBN barcode is EAN-13 and the companion price barcode is EAN-5. For the OCRA or OCRB versions of the ISBN you need to create and position a text frame of appropriate size. You need the font on your sysem also. I generally place a white rectangle of appropriate size on the bottom layer. Then I add a layer which will contain the three items mentioned above. It does not matter what OS you are using. I find the online barcode generator at: www.tux.org/~milgram/bookland/ slightly more convenient. But both are perfectly usable. My e-book listed below covers this and other issues. -- John Culleton Wexford Press Free list of books for self-publishers: http://wexfordpress.net/shortlist.html PDF e-book: "Create Book Covers with Scribus" available at http://www.booklocker.com/books/4055.html From iruckaE at mail2world.com Fri Mar 1 19:50:58 2013 From: iruckaE at mail2world.com (Irucka Embry) Date: Fri, 1 Mar 2013 11:50:58 -0800 Subject: [scribus] where do I find Scribus Barcode Generator for Ubuntu? Newbie Questions Message-ID: I've searched the archives and google and I haven't found an answer to my question yet, so I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. Version = 1.4.2 on Windows 7 64 bit. Is there a way to control knockout and overprint for text colors and text outline colors and text box colors and text box line colors _each_individually_? Alternatively, is there a way to control knockout vs. overprint by color? The case study is a table with model numbers, description and price. The background of the cells are yellow, the text inside is black and the table is over a black background. My experimenting tells me that the knockout/overprint controls in the properties dialog controls all of the above with no ability to control them individually. Is this correct? Is there another method to achieve this without creating the yellow background to the table with a separate box? -- Thanks, Jonathan Kreider Kreider Four Seasons Equipment, Inc. 1880 Harpine Hwy Harrisonburg, VA 22802 540-801-8873 Kreider Machine Shop Inc. 1886 Mt. Is this correct? So I can't control set the text to overprint and the background to knockout? So what are the design strategies and Scribus object manipulation techniques to do this? It seems like you'd have to have 4 different objects and somehow control them all together for resizing etc. I suppose it's possible to do this by grouping the objects - it just seems harder than it needs to be. What do hard core scribus users typically do? Or do you all avoid designs that require these techniques? -- Thanks, Jonathan Kreider -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Now another issue. I was hoping that the ink coverage preview facility in Scribus would be good enough that I wouldn't need the pre-press capabilities of Acrobat Pro. However, the results Scribus gives are dramatically different than what Acrobat Pro gives. Where Scribus sees maximum ink coverage of 160%, Acrobat sees ink coverage of 260% to 300%. We are living in the 21st century now, and what you are trying to do looks to me like something you would have tried during the 90's ;). The only thing you need to have is the correct ICC profile from the printing company, because that's where things like specific values for ink coverage are being stored. If you don't operate the printing machine yourself, you should never fiddle with these things manually, *especially* since the printing company uses a Prinergy workflow, which has been created to handle this automatically. If all they can provide to you is a file with the extension *.joboptions instead, open it in a text editor and find out which ICC profile they actually use. Look for something like "/DestinationProfileName (Coated FOGRA27 \050ISO 12647-2:2004\051)" then use a search engine to find the respective profile, if it's not already installed on your computer. As to not having seen a hard copy, better printing companies will provide a proof, so customers can judge whether the final result meets their intentions. It will also allow for complaints and a right for a re-run of the print if something went wrong. These are "print-ready" files. As Christoph mentioned, you should use a profile recommended by the printer. This should ideally match a color standard, such as ISO 12647-2 or SWOP. Note that there can be any number of profiles that "match" a color standard (or a given printing condition). These (print) profiles are used for two primary purposes: converting from L*a*b* to CMYK and converting from CMYK to L*a*b*. (You must associate other RGB <--> L*a*b* profiles with images, which define how the images get converted to L*a*b*.) For converting from CMYK to L*a*b*, this is fixed, and normally corresponds to a standard printing condition. That is, if a whole bunch of printers claim they match ISO 12647-2 (for a particular paper grade), then if you give them all the same CMYK separations, you should get the same L*a*b* values. For converting from L*a*b* to CMYK, this is where the variations come in. There are many (really, infinite) CMYK combinations that can produce a single L*a*b* value. So how you do the color separations depends on what is embedded in the profile (which depends on the software used to make the profile). On top of this, GCR and ink (TAC) limiting can be embedded in the profile, and there are lots of different ways of doing this. By making a PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-3 file, you are specifying the "output intent," which means you are associating a print profile that defines how you expect the color to look. In a perfect world, you have a profile that perfectly matches what the printer is doing. In reality, you get some cases where the printer completely ignores the output intent. The printer may just assume you used some printing condition, and go with that. If they don't have a proof to go by, then you usually get something the press operator thinks is right. Unfortunately, the color standards have not kept up with the rest of the print industry. This is primarily because paper L*a*b* values in ISO 12647-2 are no longer available (I've heard this directly from a paper manufacturer). The standards do not currently allow for a method to "correct" the output intent for a paper other than one in the standard. I don't mean to crush your hopes. I just live this stuff every day, and I'm quite often hitting the limits of the standards. But chances are, if you use a profile that is close to the printing condition, you'll get a good result (hopefully good enough). I understand this > only in a general sort of way, but not really in terms of how it will > affect the final product (which is printed, but I've not seen a hard > copy of). > Printers for the most part still use CMYK ink fountains or cartridges, and cameras and monitors use RGB. The gamut or range of colors available is wider in RGB than in CMYK. SWOP and my variant thereof yield CMYK values. But even in the world of CMYK some printers (LSI is one) have set up stricter limits on the amount of ink spread in "rich black" portions of your document. So if you use "my" profile (provided by a kind person on the icc profile mailing list) the output will be in CMYK and it will not bounce from LSI for too much ink coverage. Getting a proof copy is the only way to estimate what your cover etc. will look like, and maybe not then if they use a different press for proofs than for production. The good news is that if you go from RGB (e.g., a photo) to CMYK printed (PDF) output and then go back to RGB in Adobe Reader no colors or shades will be added. So the approximation will be close. It is also possible to just leave your file in RGB and let the printer translate to CMYK. He knows his press better than you do. In this case a proof is mandatory. I would err toward extra rich colors in that instance. -- John Culleton Wexford Press Free list of books for self-publishers: http://wexfordpress.net/shortlist.html PDF e-book: "Create Book Covers with Scribus" available at http://www.booklocker.com/books/4055.html From stanislaw-nalepa at wp.pl Fri Mar 8 07:24:00 2013 From: stanislaw-nalepa at wp.pl (=?ISO-8859-2?Q?stanis=B3aw_nalepa?=) Date: Fri, 08 Mar 2013 08:24:00 +0100 Subject: [scribus] scribus 1.4.2.2 Message-ID: <513992109ee694.46807192@wp.pl> An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Recently, I wrote a "book" using Libreoffice. Inserting pictures and keeping text aligned was an ORDEAL to put it mildly. So, I thought maybe a DTP software might be helpful. Problem: I wrote tex text in Japanese. When I try to copy some of that text into a Scribus textbox, I get a row of empty squares. The documentation says: Go to Preferences -> Fonts -> Additional path I added here the pathto the Fonts available on my computer (Japanese Windows XP) The list of available fonts actually lists the Japanese fonts (although not with their Japanese name). Nevertheless, they are not displayed. (I assume, they would also not be printed ...) Is there a way to change this? Thank you in advance. Message-ID: <514194E5.6050708@telkomsa.net> Hi All I have just discovered a problem with my Scribus. I was previously using Scribus 1.4.0 on PClinuxOS 2012.6 (32bit) but this last month upgraded my OpSys to 2013.02 and my Scribus to 1.4.1 (Build ID: C-C-T-F-C1.12.2). I export to PDF from Scribus and then run the following command to reduce the size of the PDF file ... /ps2pdf13 'filename.pdf' 'new name.pdf//'/ This reduces the file size by approx 80% and has been working perfectly for me for a couple of years now. Now however I still get the reduction _BUT_ all my "HotLinks" no longer work!! This applies both to internal HotLinks, (Jump to certain pages), and external HotLinks, (go to WebSite or write eMail)!! I've checked with my older files and these no longer work either whereas they were working before. Any thoughts or ideas or have we found a "bug"?? Thanks for any help. Definitively not beyond Scribus capability, but maybe beyond capability of your system (but I don`t think so). I was import into Scribus odt file with about 100 pages A4 with text size 9pt without problems. So.. maybe in file is something what broke importer. Hard to tell without problematic file. Here is a way to experiment: Make a text frame, then either use Story Editor or start Edit Contents mode. Then choose Insert > Glyph to bring up the Character Palette. From there, click the button depicting a small table and you bring up the Enhanced Character Palette, where you can go through your fonts to see of the characters you need show in the chosen font. You might insert a few to see if they then show up in the frame on the main screen. If you don't find your font in this palette, then Scribus hasn't found it. The other thing to consider is whether there may be a character encoding issue. I saved the file from a word processor as pdf and then found an online service that would reduce the size of the pdf file. So my mission was accomplished, but not using Scribus as I had hoped. It's worth having a look at Sigil, which is quite easy to use (not so bad a learning curve), so that you might consider taking the raw materials from your Scribus document and starting afresh. My hunch is that even when we might have a functioning ePub exporter, there is likely to be a need to tweak it with something like Sigil. I've always been an open source enthusiast, and I am very interested in using Scribus for our future publications and brochures. I visited the scribus wiki to get started.? The tutorial on making the Fyug project seemed very promising, but I noticed in the introduction page to the Get Started guide is missing the link to the Fyug files. http://wiki.scribus.net/canvas/Get_Started_with_Scribus *Note: If you are going through this tutorial and want to use the various > images and text for this project, click the FreedomYug link below to get > the tarred and compressed file.* Checking the revision history,? I don't know whether the link existed a while ago. Where can I find the files? The link should be on the wiki page. John Kim -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Unless someone actually spends some time on re-engineering of the PageMaker format(s) and, once this is done, a Scribus developer has enough time to write an importer, you're out of luck. What you can do, though, is to export/print the PageMaker files to PostScript files (one file per page) and then import the PS files into Scribus. If you are using InDesign, you can try to use its EPS or SVG exporters, but again: one file per page. Once Scribus 1.6.0 final is available, all this will be easier, as Scribus will then be able to import PDF, AI and IDML (hopefully) files reliably. The position and scale/fontsize of the resulitng latex equations differ between the scribus GUI and an exported PDF (typically I use the experimental embed PDF & EPS option. But the scaling is there with and without the option. The makes positioning the equations difficult and also if one wants to point with say an arrow to a part of the equation is very difficult to figure out where to point. Acutally when viewing the properties of the render frame the image tab shows an X-scale and Y-scale of 200%. Just one can not edit it because it is grey. Can you be a bit more > specific regarding which version of Scribus is the old version you refer > to, and what steps you take to import now? > Sure John, The old version was the 1.3.3.something one. Now it's 1.4.2. When I import, I open a text frame and right-click on it, choosing "load text". Then I choose the text file (odt), and check none of the check boxes offered (hoping it will simply import the text). In the past, it simply imported the text and created its own paragraph styles like P1 through P6 which could be changed to my own ones on the list without any hassle. Now it will still change to my own ones, but on some parts of the texts, or for whole texts, the font chosen does not change but rests on the font chosen automatically, even the font size remains. So in the list, it says "Title big centered" for instance, and it is centered, but it is not e. g. "Syntax" but "Liberation serif" and (sometimes) not 24 pt but only 16 pt. But sometimes it simply does what it's meant to do. So, I think this is a feature rather than a bug, but I don't see where the beast decides what to do - and how I can make sure it does what I want it to do ;-) Thanks Rolf From kj4ufg at sera.org Thu Mar 28 17:36:23 2013 From: kj4ufg at sera.org (John Ghormley KJ4UFG) Date: Thu, 28 Mar 2013 13:36:23 -0400 Subject: [scribus] New Paragraph style doesn't adapt Font In-Reply-To: <515469A8.4020309@t-online.de> References: <51533E0E.6080704@t-online.de> <515469A8.4020309@t-online.de> Message-ID: On Thu, Mar 28, 2013 at 12:02 PM, Rolf-Werner Eilert < eilert-sprachen at t-online.de> wrote: > > > Am 27.03.2013 20:57, schrieb John Ghormley KJ4UFG: > > On Wed, Mar 27, 2013 at 2:44 PM, Rolf-Werner Eilert < >> eilert-sprachen at t-online.de> wrote: >> >> Hi, >>> >>> This is somewhat confusing - and annoying sometimes: From the old Scribus >>> version I was used to changing the paragraph style in the text editor and >>> automatically adapt the text font to the paragraph style. >>> >>> Now, sometimes it doesn't change the font but chooses some other what >>> seems randomly. If so, it may be that the font called for in the .odt file does not exist on your Scribus machine or Scribus cannot find that font because it needs a path to the directory where the font resides. When getting the .odt file into the text frame, I set the importer to the "Automatic" setting and the Encoding to "System", both of which are the default settings, I believe. I check the Text Only box when I do not want styles imported at all. If you are using settings for the first two other than Automatiic and System, I suspect that may explain the difference in the results. I have tried several tests and cannot replicate your results wherein style names get changed. At the moment, we are feverishly working on all sorts of issues, including documentation, colour correctness, logo exchange, licensing etc. You could help to speed up the process by writing a shell or Python script. I receive all palettes as EPS files, which are easy to convert to Scribus's own XML palette format. However, since the colours aren't stored as spot colours, they end up being imported as something like "FromPDF#00000040", which is completely useless when referring to a printed colour swatch that is based on CMYK ink mixtures. In a Scribus XML palette file, the converted colour entry looks like this: What is needed is a script that strips the string FromPDF and converts the hex value in a specific way (adding ink channel abbreviations and slashes), so that the end result looks like this: Anyone willing to step in? The question is, what are you doing with the numbers? It seems that Scribus stores CMYK in hex values, even though when you create them you are shown a percentage scale. But 40/255 ? 25% (more like 16%). If so, send me (or post) a sample file that you want to convert and an example of the output that you need and I'll whip something up for you. I'm just now finishing up a new web and mail server, and I have a major plumbing project this coming week where the plumbers will be starting at 7am tomorrow, but after that's over I'll be happy to do this little job for you. I recognize that you asked for a "script", but all I do is C. And I won't be able to get to this for the next couple of days, as you can see, so if someone else wants to volunteer to do it "immediately" and as some sort of a script, then feel free to do so. -- MELVILLE THEATRE ~ Real D 3D Digital Cinema ~ www.melvilletheatre.com www.creekfm.com - FIFTY THOUSAND WATTS of POW WOW POWER! Thank you very much for your offer! Your mail server doesn't accept any messages, so you'd have to download the sample files from the mailing list attachments. I think what needs to be done is obvious when you look at the files. Regards, Christoph -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... I just did that very thing. > I think what needs to be done is obvious when you look at the files. Assuming that the algorithm posted earlier is the right one to use, it is indeed clear what need to be done. I have just saved those files into my "pending job" folder and will get to it as soon as I can. If those plumbers finish as they said that they will, they will be out of here by sometime Tuesday. -- MELVILLE THEATRE ~ Real D 3D Digital Cinema ~ www.melvilletheatre.com www.creekfm.com - FIFTY THOUSAND WATTS of POW WOW POWER!
