That's the Way LSI sees it but its doesn't seem to be the 
case in the actual PDF/X-1a:2001 specifs, at least in those 
described here:

I understand that and my message is not written against you. 
I'm just trying to help you find a solution to your issue.  :)


The color profile is usefull (not to say essential) when 
converting from RGB to CMYK.
A good profile choice leads to a file with good ink coverage.

That said, I don't know which open-source tools you can use 
for that...
