Thanks a.l.e.
So does that mean that when you create a new document, but never
explicitly create any master pages, Scribus uses some kind internal
default master page? (Maybe a slightly dumb question, but my Official
Manual is at home).

every page must be based on a master page... you can't deassign it :-)
but you can set another master page to any page...
this may be also bonnie's problem... didn't think about it :-)
there is no such thing as "no master page" but there are "empty
masterpages"...
