[scribus] scribus Digest, Vol 44, Issue 14

Thanks for the fantastic responses to my question about installing GhostScript Suite as an integral aspect of installing Scribus 1.4.0 RC6 on my computer!  I will explore each of your suggestions.  I'm excited about using Scribus for the creation of a cover file for my book submission to LSI.

In answer to John Culleton's question: My OS is Windows 7.

In this case, your accusation of Ubuntu is totally unfounded.  Although the
gentleman apparently did not realize it, he did have a choice when the
upgrade to the latest version of Ubuntu Linux was done.  Ubuntu does not
automatically upgrade from a stable version to an unstable version.  The
fact that both exists in their repositories is proof of that.  Ubuntu sees
the two versions as different apps as much as GIMP and Inkscape are
different apps even as you pointed out it your first paragraph.

It is not just a case of transforming 1.4.0 output to 1.3.3.14.
There have been intermediate versions. While the sequence 1.3.5
to 1.4.0 used basically the same file format I don't know if an
sla file from 1.4.0 will always load correctly in e.g., 1.3.5.
Should all the intermediate versions be accommodated in 1.4.0?

If features changed between 1.4.0 and 1.3.3.x are just left out of
the saved file the appearance of the file may be distorted beyond
recognition.

For example, assume that a gradient is used. Assume further that
gradients are handled differently in the two editions. If you
just delete the gradient then the files appearance is changed. If
you ask that the 1.4.0 file be rewritten to resemble the 1.3.3.x
file format then you are asking for a lot more than just deleting
features. This not a real example but is just an example of the
kind of problem that might occur.

Users can and should keep up with the latest version, 1.4.0. It
is too much to ask of the maintainers that all older versions be
kept viable in perpetuity. What about 2.0?

In downloading the 6 programs necessary for Scribus 1.4.0 RC6, five of the six programs downloaded without a problem.? But I have run into a problem trying to download the GhostScript Suite.? When I get to the dialog box asking the question: Do you want to open or save this file? [ghostscript-9.04.tar bz2? / 28.4 MB] -- I get trapped in an endless loop when I click either "Save" or "Open."

When I click on "Save," I get the option "Open."? But when I click on the option "Open," the screen blinks once and nothing happens.? No matter how many times I try, the same endless loop takes place.? None of the drop down options revealed by the drop down arrows that appear next to the "Save" or "Open" buttons changes this endless loop.

Two questions:

(1)? Why won't the GhostScript Suite download?? (What am I doing wrong?);

(2)? If I cannot successfully download the GhostScript Suite, will Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro work successfully with Scribus 1.4.0 RC6 to create PDF cover files acceptable to LSI?

Try downloading it by wget instead of through your browser.

6 programs ? Strange, i only need one : scribus.

AFAIK Scribus does not use ghostscript to produce PDFs so it shouldnt be a problem.

Ghostscript is needed to import or export ps or eps files. It
should be installed BEFORE Scribus is installed. There are times
when importing an eps file, or saving a ps file, is useful. For
example although Scribus has a built-in barcode mechanism it is
more convenient in many case to just use the bookland facility to
get a single eps file with both barcodes and the ocrb text
included and properly arranged.  The most convenient way to use an
LSI cover template is to import it as an eps file. I don't like to use
the LSI template but it is apparently mandatory for books with color
interiors.

In addition to Ghostscript a well-endowed Scribus computer will
also have Gimp and TeX installed, since Scribus can make use of
both. Fortunately Linux usually comes with both.

It might help to know what OS the original poster is using. I
assume MSWin.

Except that the latest version (1.4.0) is not actually a version yet - it's a "release candidate", and not "officially stable" yet.  There is a BIG difference in text rendering between RC6 and RC5.  If these kinds of layout changes commonly occur between releases (including candidates), users would have a full-time career just in reworking their documents to keep pace with the code changes.  (Not all code changes are simply to implement new features.  Some of them royally screw up the carefully laid out arrangement of a user's document, and they might not WANT to keep up with the latest "version".)

thanks for the Reader tipp, did not know that it flattens.

On my project all png transparency was lost after selecting X-3
format, too bad!
