You can have nearly any shape you want for the contour line - editing it (nodes, bezier curve handles, number of nodes, etc) is the same as editing a vector shape.  You just need to make sure the Edit Contour Path checkbox is enabled (and you'll know you're editing the right path because it will change from black to blue).

and in the edit shape dialog there is an easy way to increase/decrease 
the size of the Contour line by either a certain percentage or certain 
amount (distance). As Mike says, make sure you check to flow text around 
Contour line and check the box so that you edit the Contour line.

With flowing around a text frame, of course, you can set text distances 
for top, bottom, and each side.
