to the best of our knowledge, PDF/X-4 isn't widely supported yet.
PDF 1.4 and above can handle transparency, so it might be good to see if
your printer can handle those.
Sometimes it seems that these rigid "requirements" speak more to the
printers' inexperience and lack of knowledge, or perhaps wanting to
charge additionally for processing your files.
