Hi Alison, use OpenOfficeOrg (openoffice.org) - its free,  ... open the .doc documents then save it to .odt file format. Scribus import it very well.

hello!  my Linux computer has died and am now doing my newsletter in
the MAC version of Scribus for the first time.  what format do i need
to have the files in to save the formatting?  they won't open in Word
and switching them to plain text files makes all the formatting
disappear.  this will take me about 4x as long to do if i have to
manually put all the paragraph spacing back in by hand and it's a
looooooong document.  thank you!
