A work around that might help when you run into these 32 vs 64bit binaries.
1. If you have a 32bit binary install it with the dpkg -i
--force-architecture nameofpackage.deb
2. If you need to compile it, and only 32 bit instructions are available
setup a 32bit chroot and do all the building and installing there.
