Hi Nigel -- yes, you can do it that way with no trouble whatsoever.
That's how I am controlling workflow for the 320 page book I am
publishing now, using all open source software including Scribus.
The PDFs that go to the print shop are at 300 dpi, and take quite a few
minutes per chapter to generate. The 72 dpi ones for emailing to
co-workers for editing and for posting on the web for PDF download
generate very quickly, with no issues except for resolution (photos and
CAD a bit blurry at only 72dpi, etc).
AND, when I recieve annotated PDFs back from my co-author, there's no
chance of confusing them, even he messes up the filemane for versioning
-- if I see 72 dpi, I know it's an edit and not a final.
Cheers -- DAN F
