I think I've got it now. The problem came down to the Master Page named 
"". Once you delete that the file will load, *IF* you also go to the 
line for "New Master Page R" and change NUM="3" to NUM="2", since that 
was the number of the MP for "". In the end, Scribus crashed looking for 
a Master Page that didn't exist.

Lesson: Make sure Master Pages have a valid name.
