I gather you're using 1.3.4+, since that is where this comes into play.
My understanding is that Character Styles are a subset of Paragraph
Styles, but could be set independently. In other words, if you set a
Paragraph Style, it will by necessity have a Character Style. But you
can also set a separate Character Style just for the font. So there may
be a certain order to get things the way you want -- set Paragraph
Style, then Character Style if different from that in the Paragraph Style.
If you are importing a 1.3.3.x or earlier doc, there can be some
confusion on Scribus's part about what to do and sometimes you may need
to clear the Styles and reset them.
